An Original Panerai Wrist Compass and scale model of the "Mignatta"
A BRIEF PANERAI HISTORY
frogmen.jpg
In 1850 Giovanni Panerai opened a small watchmakers shop on the Ponte alle Grazie in Florence. After moving and growing several times, Orologeria G Panerai & Co settled in the Archiepiscopal Palace.
The shop sold some of the most well-known Swiss made timepieces, such as Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe, and others. Their repair shop became the first watchmaking school in Florence.
But, some of Panerai's most valuable work was for the Italian Navy. They made everything from Aiming Devices for Patrol boats, to Depth Gauges, to Underwater Floodlights. They were comissioned to make water and pressure proof watches and wrist compasses for the elite divers of the Italian Navy, equivalent to the US Navy Seals, who were brave enough to navigate the "Mignatta", also nicknamed "The Pig". "The Pig" was a two manned underwater assault craft made from a modified torpedo. These instruments and watches that Panerai made were considered military secrets.
Today, the rich history and proud craftsmanship behind Panerai still resonates through every watch made today. Most Panerai owners will tell you that there is something special about these watches, something that causes them to be more passionate about these watches than any other watch they own.
We are not affiliated with Panerai or the Richmont Group.
